The Apple
The bite has been taken, the spell shattered
The beauty gone, a world left battered
No longer protected but left to one’s own
No place to go and no sense of home
The tears will fall and the ground will quake
The skin will bruise and the sleeper will wake
Perfection is gone, grief has come to stay
That trapped evil is no longer kept at bay
Through the serpents keen eyes
Came a dark and truthful lie
To gain all knowledge and be godly in state
Is far too wonderful to even another moment wait
The serpent drew near, silent and slow
Sweet victory is in the future it knows
Some see its scales and slithering tail
And know that it is the angel that failed
Others see it as the great Prometheus of the rock
Who brought fire to the mortals at the gods’ all-knowing shock
But it is indeed simply mad
For losing the wonderful world that it had
Though so intelligent as the serpent is
The next action startled even a mind such as his
Eve was happy to bite; she is tired of this world
Of flowers of red and rain of pearls
She grasped the apple and let the juice drip
She devoured it whole with it still in her grip
Adam looked on, his stare empty and dumb
He was not tempted, his feelings too numb
The serpent only offered, no temptation was in need
For Eve already knew of what was her deed
Her wish was of freedom, to live away from here
To banish perfection and to live in fear
The garden was always lit but not bright
And Eve needed to see darkness to know of light
The apple tasted sour and Eve now knew of sweet
She would feel the cold and know of the heat.
Wind could blow and fire could burn
With each passing moment a new sensation she could learn.
Adam was lost, afraid of his world
He closed his eyes and over he curled
Into a ball down in the dirt
Afraid of love and afraid of hurt
Eve smiled for the very first time
Thanked the serpent and marveled at her god’s design
I did not come from a rib as they say,
But of the earth and the sea on that seventh day
That tree lies, I don’t know everything
But I know that I am a part of this life ring
Adam will follow me, scared and lost
Through summer’s heat and winter’s frost
We will learn and grow and live together,
Through all kinds of times, feelings and weather
He will begin to believe in me, in our lives
In the hunger for love and for knowledge that drives
Ignorance is not bliss, I call to the trees
When the only world known is the one I perceive
That garden, in its dreadful perfection be damned
I feel neither sadness nor remorse from it being banned
Evil must be known to know good
And now with the world of the real they could
Up above in the heavenly clouds
Their god thought on what he had allowed
As this god watched, he cracked a smile
“They have finally learned. That took quite a while.”
